1. Overview of the institution

Located in FrederictonNew Brunswick, in eastern Canada, St. Thomas is a small, primarily undergraduate university dedicated to excellence in liberal arts education. Our 1,800 Bachelor of Arts students engage in a broad and rigorous education through exceptional offerings in traditional disciplines such as PsychologyEnglish, Economics, Political Science, andFine Arts, and more unique programs that offer increasing value to our world today—Communications and Public PolicyCriminologyGerontologyHuman Rights, International Relations,andJournalism. Our students participate in experiential learning opportunities—service learning; field work; internships; practicums; travel study; lab work; and partnerships with the Harvard Business School, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and American Moot Court Association—that allow them to apply their education in practical settings and develop professional contacts and skills needed to excel after graduation.

2. Location and facilities

St. Thomas University is located in the capital city of New Brunswick, Canada’s only official bilingual province. Fredericton is the ideal student city. With a greater area population of approximately 85,000, the city offers the perfect balance of small town charm and big city spirit. From coffee shops, music and art festivals, concerts, restaurants, city-wide walking trails, a nearby downhill ski hill, farmer’s markets, malls, theatres, and fitness centres, there’s plenty of fun, healthy, and safe ways to spend your downtime with friends.

5. Scholarships

The university dedicates $1.8 million to student financial aid each year. STU offers a competitive scholarship and bursary program for international students. Our major renewable scholarships are merit-based and take into account academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, volunteering, and leadership positions. Students submit one application and are considered for all awards, which range in amounts up to one full-tuition scholarship per year.

Financial-need bursaries can be given in combination with academic scholarships.

We offer academic support, employment and career counseling, health and counseling services, and accessibility services among others. International students have an international student advisor on campus that can help them with everything from navigating their health plan to counseling.

Academic Services

  • Peer Tutoring à Students are eligible to receive up to 2 hours of free tutoring per week.
  • The Writing Centre à The Writing Centre is a free service available to all students. Whether it’s your first essay or your fourth-year honors thesis, the Centre can assist you with all aspects of the writing process, from planning an outline to polishing a final draft. Students can book up to two 50-minute appointments per week (one per day).
  • Student Advising à help with course selection, degree audits, career plans, financial resources information, etc.
  • Departmental advisors.

The Career Centre offers the following facilities to students:

The J.O.B.S. (Job Opportunities Benefitting Students) programme is an employment programme for all St. Thomas students that allows students to work on campus during the September to April school year up to 10 hours per week.
