Scholarships to Study in Norway

Norwegian Quota Scheme
The Quota Scheme awards scholarships for students from developing countries and countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia through the Quota Scheme. The main objective of the Quota Scheme is to contribute to capacity building through education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return.  The scheme normally includes courses taught in English at Masters and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees.  Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 40 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 60 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study.

Erasmus+ Scholarship Program in Norway

Erasmus+ offers grants to students from programme and partner countries who wish to pursue Bachelor, Master or PhD studies at a university or university college in Norway as a part of their education.  Each successful student receives a monthly grant between € 250 and € 850. The monthly grant is based on a fixed rate for each country. As an Erasmus student you are exempted from paying fees for tuition, registration, examinations and access to laboratory and library facilities at the host institution.

Living costs are high in Norway and residents frequently travel to neighbouring countries to buy cheaper food and alcohol. Typical costs (GBP, March 2015) are:

  • Meal, inexpensive restaurant: £12.39
  • Meal at McDonalds: £8.26
  • Domestic beer (0.5 litre draught): £6.20
  • Imported beer (0.33 litre bottle): £5.78
  • Cappuccino: £2.98
  • Coke/Pepsi (0.33 litre bottle): £2.23
  • Water (0.33 litre bottle): £1.99
  • Loaf of bread: £1.98
  • Cigarettes: £7.93
  • One-way ticket local transport: £3.06
  • Cinema ticket: £9.09

For undergraduate courses, foreign students need to apply via the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS) before 1 March for the academic intake beginning in the autumn. For master’s degree programmes, direct applications are more usual and applicants should check with their preferred institution for their admissions procedures and deadlines.
