Quite unlike our scorching Indian summers & crazy monsoons, Canada has four distinct seasons spanning the year - spring (the period of March-May); summer (the period of June-August); fall (the period of September-October); and winter (the period of November-February). Of course, we can’t talk about student life in Canada without mentioning their world renowned winters now, can we?
Watch out! Temperatures in the far north hardly rise above 0°C for a few months in a year-brrrr! But the country’s southern border sees hot summers, warm springs, and pleasant autumns for a good seven month-period before winter sets in. And when we say winter- we mean be prepared for a bitter onslaught of CHILL. The average low that a January in Ottawa could have is around -14.4 C. We don’t need to say it- but hey- that's pretty cold!

Feel @Home in Your Dorm?!
Next most important thing to focus on, post choosing your programme of study, is your accommodation. Many universities have residential halls or dorms on campus which you can choose to live in. You should check the university website for application deadlines and apply ASAP. Some Canadian universities offer optional meal plans which allow you to pay up-front for two or three meal tickets per day.
We advise you to stay on campus accommodation for the first two years of study. This way you can save up on transport, make friends with a wider circle of students, and find good study partners much more easily.
If however you’re looking for private accommodation, we suggest you check with the student union office or housing office on campus for a list of rental units nearby. Keep in mind that these may not be inspected by your uni and it is up to you to contact the landlord and get all your required details sorted. Accommodation costs per year could range from CAD 5,500 to 9,000.

All you need to do is look for work opportunities post graduation. And in order for you to be able to work- you have to obtain what is known as a “Post- Graduation Work Permit” or the PGWPP. And-get this- you will be offered one even if you don’t have a job offer ready at hand!
Here’s a clear picture (literally!) of the work permit basics you need to know:

The PGWPP’s validity will not be longer than the duration of the program you’re taking. If your study program is for four years, then you’d be eligible for a three-year work permit; or in case it is just an 8-months course- then you’d be able to work only for the period of eight months. So simple and yet so amazing (Thank you Canadian Government- Shukriya!)
