• Always check the weather forecast before heading out. You don’t want to end up getting caught in a blizzard! Yikes.
• Take winter clothing off the “Items to Buy Later” list- you need to shop & pack in as many as possible. We suggest you invest in quality winter jackets, gloves, scarves, and boots.
• Never step out without dressing in layers.
• Frostbite is scary; ensure your fingers, toes, cheeks, or ears are not exposed to extremely cold temperatures even for a short period of time- ouch!

Next most important thing to focus on, post choosing your programme of study, is your accommodation. Many universities have residential halls or dorms on campus which you can choose to live in. You should check the university website for application deadlines and apply ASAP. Some Canadian universities offer optional meal plans which allow you to pay up-front for two or three meal tickets per day.

We advise you to stay on campus accommodation for the first two years of study. This way you can save up on transport, make friends with a wider circle of students, and find good study partners much more easily.

If however you’re looking for private accommodation, we suggest you check with the student union office or housing office on campus for a list of rental units nearby. Keep in mind that these may not be inspected by your uni and it is up to you to contact the landlord and get all your required details sorted. Accommodation costs per year could range from CAD 5,500 to 9,000.

The PGWPP’s validity will not be longer than the duration of the program you’re taking. If your study program is for four years, then you’d be eligible for a three-year work permit; or in case it is just an 8-months course- then you’d be able to work only for the period of eight months.
